Our very first theme at Joyful Journeys: Yoga ABC's! But why did I choose this as our first theme? While it is a little more explorative and less flowy than a conventional yoga class, I felt the ABC theme was a great introduction to embark on our yoga journey together! Taking our practice right back to basics, emphasising class structures, and incorporating creativity and playfulness with the alphabet.

Yoga is a fantastic way to introduce children to physical activity, mindfulness, and self-awareness. The alphabet serves as a perfect guide to navigate through various yoga poses, turning the learning process into an exciting adventure.
Start with "A" for Archer Pose or Apple (child's pose), "B" for Butterfly Pose, and continue through the alphabet, allowing each letter to represent a new pose. This method not only keeps children engaged but also helps them develop motor skills, balance, and coordination.
Though-out this theme we have also been introducing what a standard class will look like to the children. Class structures in yoga are crucial as they provide a framework for a well-rounded and purposeful experience. A carefully designed class structure ensures that each element, from the opening breaths to the final relaxation, serves a specific purpose in promoting physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It offers a sense of predictability and order, making participants feel secure and allowing them to fully engage in the practice. Here's our class structure which we have been following :
1. Opening Breaths (Prana):
Welcoming each class with a focus on breath – the life force energy known as prana in yoga. Guided breathing exercises help children centre themselves, promoting a calm and receptive state of mind for the practice ahead.
2. Warming Up and Sun Salutations:
The Shimmy and Dance to the Sun, lively and enchanting songs by Kira Willey, sets the tone for a warm-up filled with joy and energy. Incorporating Sun Salutations enhances flexibility and circulation, preparing the body for the upcoming asana practice.
3. Exploring Poses (Asanas):
A is for Asana – The Alphabet of Poses! We have been diving into the ABC's of yoga poses, encouraging children to embody the shapes associated with each letter. This segment allows them to experience the physical and mental benefits of yoga while having fun and fostering creativity. Depending on each specific class we might also include various games, songs, books and group work during this section.

4. Finishing with Relaxation (Savasana):
The most important part of a class. After a short warm down we conclude the class with Savasana, or the relaxation pose. This final stage allows children to absorb the benefits of their practice, promoting a sense of inner peace and tranquillity. It also helps in integrating the physical and mental aspects of the practice. We've explored various methods of Savasana so far with guided meditations, lemon toes, and cooked spaghetti!

Yoga ABC has provided a whimsical and educational entry point for children into the world of yoga. By combining the joy of movement with the structure of the alphabet, we create a foundation for lifelong well-being. Through thoughtful class structures, we ensure that every session becomes a holistic journey – from opening breaths to playful exploration and finally, the blissful relaxation of Savasana. Let's embark on this yoga adventure together, nurturing both the minds and bodies of our little yogis.
